Introduction

Exam 8 consists of roughly 700 pages of material, not all of which will appear on every exam. There are five larger readings (in approximate order of importance)

• "Individual Risk Study Note" by Fisher et al.
• "Distributions for Actuaries" by Bahnemann (Chapters 5 & 6 only)
• "Generalized Linear Models for Insurance Rating" by Goldburd, Khare, Tevet & Guller
• "Basics of Reinsurance Pricing" by Clark
• "Catastrophe Modeling: A New Approach to Managing Risk" by Grossi & Kunreuther

There are nine other readings which are smaller and cover a variety of topics. Although the ranking below is based on the recent exams, in the last year or so the CAS appears to be placing greater emphasis on Generalized Linear Models (GLMs).

Since the material within the larger readings builds up, it's recommended you start them from the beginning rather than reading the articles in rank order. When you want a change of pace, pick up one of the smaller readings for a break. Once you're through all of the material once, go back through the material using the ranking table order to make sure you know all of the high priority material really well.
